14 Dick Pearce Quartet BOOK NOW

Dick Pearce – Trumpet, John Donaldson – Piano, Alex Keen – Bass, Vince Clark – Drums

Dick first emerged on London’s jazz scene in the early 1970’s.  Since then, his sound and his approach to improvisation have enhanced many jazz groups, TV jingles and studio recordings.

He is probably best known for his work with Ronnie Scott between 1980 and 1994 and is widely considered to be one of the country's finest jazz musicians.


21 Simon Allen Quintet BOOK NOW

Simon Allen – Saxes, Martin Shaw – Trumpet, Tom Cawley – Piano, Laurence Cottle – Bass, Mike Bradley – Drums

This exciting musician leads his own group of all stars, tonight performing originals and arrangements from his latest album “Any Minute Now”.  Simon has a strong pedigree being a regular member of Stan Tracey's groups and Matthew Herbert's Orchestra and having worked alongside Kenny Wheeler, Django Bates and Iain Ballamy among others so come and be dazzled by this excellent line up.

28 Howard Alden Quartet* BOOK NOW

Howard Alden – Guitar, Mark Crooks – Tenor, Simon Woolf – Bass, Clark Tracey – Drums

A welcome return to Herts Jazz and the UK by this outstanding guitarist.  Born in California, Howard moved to New York aged 21 and soon carved himself a considerable niche as the most noted jazz guitarist of his generation, signing with Concord Jazz and performing alongside some of the greatest names in the business, like Clark Terry, Woody Herman, Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie.



5 Chris Laurence Quartet BOOK NOW

Master bassist Chris Laurence brings the group who's recent CD “New View” received glowing accolades from the critics.  Chris has managed to 'cross over' between jazz and classical throughout his career, enabling him to perform with such diverse artists as John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, John Surman and JJ Johnson as well as being principal bass with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields until 1995.  This is a band of exceptional musicians and a real treat to witness.

12 Mornington Lockett Quartet BOOK NOW

Mornington Lockett – Saxes, John Critchinson – Piano, Paul Morgan – Bass, Clark Tracey – Drums

Mornington has a career rivalled by only a few.  He has performed and recorded with a multitude of top names here and internationally.  He has a powerhouse reputation on his instrument and is noted not only for his technical abilities but also his musical invention.  Accompanied by the wonderful John Critchinson on piano, Mornington plays his arrangements of some great material.


19 Trudy Kerr/Ingrid James Quintet BOOK NOW

Expatriate Australian singer Trudy Kerr has long been a welcome presence on the UK jazz scene. She has recorded a string of albums for the Jazzizit label, including “Reunion”, which teams her with fellow Australian Ingrid James. They had sung together some 20 years ago and whilst Kerr has been carving out a successful career in the UK, Queensland based James has been doing much the same in Australasia.


26 Peter King Quartet BOOK NOW

With a career spanning back to the late 1950s, Peter King has remained at the forefront of his craft, having won numerous awards and accolades on his instrument.  A member of the British jazz elite, his pedigree is unrivalled.  Drawing musical inspiration from Parker and Coltrane, he has a unique voice in jazz and is without doubt one of the most respected British musicians on both sides of the Atlantic.



2 Derek Nash Quartet BOOK NOW

Derek Nash – Saxes, David Newton – Piano, Geoff Gascoyne – Bass, Sebastiaan De Krom – Drums

A really popular multi reedsman, Derek has become a favourite at jazz clubs and festivals all over Britain.  As a sideman he has been a member of Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and the Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion for many years.  He has also led his own groups for over 30 years and released numerous albums under his own name including “Joyriding” with the all star group featured tonight.



Georgia Mancio – Vocals, Tim Lapthorn – Piano, Julie Walkington – Bass, Dave Ohm – Drums

Award-winning jazz vocalist/lyricist, Mancio, has proved herself one of the UK’s most original, inventive and important new artists.  She has worked with Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, Jason Rebello, Gwilym Simcock and Bobby Wellins, played several residencies at Ronnie Scott's, produced 3 albums and runs her own international voice festival, ReVoice!


9 Dave Newton Quartet BOOK NOW

Dave Newton - Piano, Martin Shaw - Trumpet, Arnie Somogyi - Bass, Matt Skelton - Drums

What a great replacement for Georgia who had to cancel. Dave Newton is one of the heavyweights of British Jazz and a master of the jazz piano.  There is a sophistication about Dave's playing that runs deep, whether ballads, swingers or flag wavers, he has it all.  He is a fantastic mainstream pianist who plays with wit and grace, as well as swinging like the clappers. A hugely popular performer at Herts Jazz, David is dripping with awards for Best Pianist, so we're hoping for another huge turnout to hear one of Europe's best musicians with a great band up close for a night of superlative piano.

16 Mick Hutton Quartet BOOK NOW

Mick Hutton – Bass, Ben Castle – Tenor, Mark Edwards – Piano, Paul Robinson – Drums

A real pleasure to have one of the UK's most prominent bassists at the club.  Mick has been active on the London Jazz Scene since 1981 in a wide variety of settings as a sideman (Humphrey Lyttelton, Nigel Kennedy, Jim Mullen, Don Weller, Bobby Wellins) and has also led his own bands for over 20 years.  The music for this gig will include tunes by Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus.


23 Stan Tracey Quintet* BOOK NOW

The maestro returns for his honorary seasonal gig with a brand new line up, performing recently penned material from a newly recorded suite “The Flying Pig” - a tribute to his father and his WW1 experience.  Stan

celebrates his 70th year in music this year and is often quoted as “The Godfather of British Jazz”, receiving a CBE for services to music a few years ago on top of a long list of awards going back decades.


30 Nadim Teimoori Quartet BOOK NOW

Nadim Teimoori – Tenor, Chris Eldred – Piano, Conor Chaplin – Bass, Corrie Dick – Drums

Nadim 22, studies at the Royal Academy where performance highlights have included concerts with Julian Arguelles and Peter Erskine.  His current projects include his Octet, promoting the writings of the Baha’i Faith.  A recent winner of the Humphrey Lyttelton RAM Jazz Award, Nadim, last heard at the club with Stan Tracey, is a genuine musical sensation – trust us!

7 Steve Melling Trio + Nigel Hitchcock BOOK NOW

Back at the club with his latest trio, Steve has invited the superb Nigel Hitchcock to join them.  Steve has a formidable background, performing with heavyweights like Elvin Jones, Peter King, Alan Skidmore, Phil Woods, Benny Golson and he recently became a member of the European Jazz Ensemble.  A great way to open our new season, come and check out this great pianist.
