17 Matt Wates Sextet * BOOK NOW

Matt Wates - Alto, Steve Fishwick - Trumpet, Steve Main - Tenor, Leon Greening - Piano, Alec Dankworth - Bass, Matt Home - Drums

Matt was born in London in 1964 and graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1988. He has appeared with Bucky Pizzarelli, John Colianni, Humphrey Lyttelton, Don Weller, Bobby Wellins, Dusko Goykovich, Norma Winstone and Peter King. He has recorded with Paz, Roadside Picnic, Itchy Fingers, NYJO, the Michael Garrick Big Band, Sax Appeal and Jamie Cullum. The Matt Wates Sextet has recorded nine albums on the Audio-B label. He won the Rising Star award in the 1997 BT British Jazz Awards, and the Matt Wates Sextet won the Best Small Group award in 2001.  Always a pleasure to have this great band at the club.


24 Tom Millar Quartet BOOK NOW

Tom Millar is a London-based pianist, composer and bandleader. He was born in Sydney, Australia and grew up in London. After reading Music at King’s College, Cambridge, he studied Jazz Piano and Composition for a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and with Django Bates in Switzerland.  Tom's quartet release their debut CD this week and this gig is part of a 20 date promotional tour, featuring outstanding emergent young musicians worthy of a national platform.



1 Karen Sharp & Artie Zaitz with the Clark Tracey Trio BOOK NOW

The first of several gigs this season where I've paired up established musicians with those guys deserving wider recognition.  Karen and Dave are of course familiar award winning faces on the jazz scene.  Artie and Rupert can often be found at the Ronnie Scott's Club jam sessions where they have both gained reputations as future stars in the tradition.  Come and enjoy a night of true spontaneity in music.


8 Damon Brown Quintet BOOK NOW

Damon Brown – Trumpet, Christian Brewer- Alto, Leon Greening – Piano, Adam King – Bass, Kim Minchan – Drums

A trumpet player and composer whose “Killer Shrimp” group won a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble in 2007 (not to mention a nomination for Best CD), Damon Brown has spent years living abroad, exploring his craft. The journey has yielded more than musical inspiration, with many international collaborations ensuing, such as the regular quintet that he co-leads with New York sax virtuoso Steve Grossman.  Good to have this underrated musician back again.



22 Paul Booth Quartet BOOK NOW

Having released four solo albums to date, Paul Booth has firmly established himself as an in demand solo artist, as well as a ‘first call’ sideman for many big names in both jazz and popular music worlds.  In his early years, whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he won many awards including the prestigious Clifford Brown/Stan Getz fellowship held in Miami, “The Best Modern Jazz Player” category in the televised “Young Jazz Player of the Year” competition and several more.

The return of our esteemed HJ Patron, Art Themen, this time with an exceptional tenor player from Glasgow, Konrad Wiszniewski.  We're flying Konrad down for this one performance so do make a point of catching this rare event.  A recipient of a Parliamentary Jazz Award and numerous Scottish Jazz Awards have made Konrad a sought after player by some of the country's top names including the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, The BBC Big Band, Brass Jaw, The Colin Steele Quartet, Martha Reeves and many more.



5 Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale & Nadim Teimoori * BOOK NOW

Another great line up on its first gig featuring jazz masters, Messrs. Barnes, Nightingale and Hodgson, alongside the younger generation of Teimoori and Tandy.  Nadim and Sarah are both making great strides in the jazz world, Sarah being a former winner of the piano final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year and recently seen with Jazz Jamaica, while Nadim has risen through the ranks of NYJO, becoming Stan Tracey's new frontline man and now a member of Tracey's legacy sextet.

Tonight we present two groups for the price of one! A truly international feast of musicians in the UK, both groups are on tour separately at the moment so we thought we'd provide both bands.  Vasilis is making his debut at the club as a leader; a precocious tenor player, accompanied by the ubiquitous Nigel Price.  Gilad is paying tribute to that jazz icon, John Coltrane, who left us 50 years ago this year.  Make sure you book early for this evening of great jazz.



19 Mark Armstrong & Simon Allen with the Clark Tracey Trio BOOK NOW

Mark and Simon were both members of Clark’s quintet 17 years ago.  Both were later picked up by Stan Tracey, joining his quintet, sextet, octet and big band to reach a wider audience.  Both outstanding performers, they are both heavily involved in jazz education.  Mark is Artistic Director of NYJO and is a jazz professor at the Royal College of Music, while Simon was appointed Head of Jazz at the prestigious Purcell School of Music in 2014.



26 Hans Koller Trio – Monk Tribute BOOK NOW

Making his debut at the club is Bavarian born Hans Koller.  Hans arrived in the UK in 1991 to study composition.  His involvement with the London jazz scene, working with and writing for Stan Sulzmann, Steve Lacy, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Brookmeyer and many others, has seen him become a welcome resident.  Hans is a huge admirer of Thelonious Monk and has studied him in depth so tonight we pay tribute to the piano legend in trio format.



3 Steve Waterman & Dave O'Higgins with the Clark Tracey Trio BOOK NOW

“A galaxy of talent” as Ronnie Scott used to wittily refer to such line ups.  Tonight is an impromptu session featuring two of the country's most respected and talented jazz artists, both also great composers and band leaders in their own right – O'Higgins and Waterman.  Greening and Moss are on a national tour while Danny is over from Australia and it's great to have him appearing here again.



10 Two Of A Mind BOOK NOW

Exploring afresh the freewheeling, wonderfully melodic interpretations of standard material recorded 50 years ago by Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond on Blues in Time and Two of a Mind, this new band promises to evoke the spirit of these classic recordings while giving free reign to the personalities of the musicians.  Led by two of our most popular guest artists, this will be a superb evening of tribute and appreciation of those early jazz masters.

17 Rob Barron Quintet * BOOK NOW

Mostly to be found leading his trio, freelancing or accompanying the biggest name jazz vocalists, Rob is featured in his own quintet tonight to close our season.  Rob has chosen a superb group to showcase his material, as you can see.  Having performed with the likes of Al Jarreau, Marlena Shaw (Ronnie Scott’s club residencies), Benny Golson, Phil Woods, Grant Stewart and Sheryl Bailey, it's a privilege to have this great pianist appear at our venue and to bring 2017 to a close.
