11 Terry Seabrook's Milestones* BOOK NOW

We're delighted to open our new season with one of the most popular bands to appear at Herts Jazz.  Terry Seabrook leads this group of great musicians as they perform the music from Miles Davis' legendary album "Kind Of Blue".  The atmosphere from that recording is immediately recreated and delivered with sensitivity and respect to the original.


18 Alex Garnett's Bunch Of Fives BOOK NOW

The brainchild of UK saxophone colossus Alex Garnett, This quintet aims to bring the duelling saxophone line-up of yesteryear into the new territory of contemporary jazz and improvised music, giving it a fresh face without losing its historic punch.  The music will be rooted in jazz but with the eclectic tastes and experience of the ensemble will tackle new and exciting original repertoire, which will challenge the traditional views on the concept and sound of what a two-saxophone frontline can offer.

Formed out of Alec's love of music from the Iberian peninsula, World Spirit crosses the Straits of Gibraltar into Africa and beyond.  With tunes by Duke Ellington, Bela Flek, Antonio-Carlos Jobim, Abdullah Ibrahim and WC Handy originating from Ireland, Venezuela, Bulgaria, South Africa, Mali and Brazil, World Spirit offers an evening of global song and improvisation.


8 Liane Carroll Trio** BOOK NOW

One of the most in-demand vocalists on the British Jazz Scene, we're pleased to be able to present Liane with her trio at the club.  Double BBC Jazz Award winner, Liane has been described by the Guardian as a ‘world-class blues and ballads singer’.  A soulful, impassioned singer and superb pianist – "her range runs from a heartbreaking ability to live an emotional lyric to breathless vocal virtuosity that makes an audience jump with joy".


15 Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble BOOK NOW

Gilad is one of the greatest sax players of our era - Robert Wyatt in the guardian has called him the best musician in the world today. Atzmon and the orient house ensemble, renowned for their unique mix of jazz, folk and Arab music, are releasing their 8th album, The Whistle Blower. The band has been touring for nearly 15 years, gaining a reputation as one of European jazz’s preeminent bands. Gilad has been called “a local jazz giant” (Guardian) “exhilarating” (Herald Sunday tribune), “astonishing” (Metro). You can listen to The Orient House Ensemble’s award-winning albums, but seeing the band live is an experience not to be missed.


22 Tribute to Tommy Whittle BOOK NOW

Barbara Jay – Narrative/Vocals, Art Themen - Tenor, Richard Busiaciewicz - Piano, Dave Green – Bass, Clark Tracey – Drums

Tommy, who died in 2013, was one of this country's best loved musicians, achieving fame from the early days of British jazz through the big bands and finally later in life as a small group band leader.  As well as being an exceptional musician, he was also a talented composer and this evening pays tribute to some of his compositions, interspersed with narration by his wife and partner for many years, vocalist Barbara Jay.  We're also delighted to have Art themen back at the club (Herts Jazz's Honorary Patron), who will be playing Tommy's music on tenor.

A welcome visit to the club by American tenor player, Harry Allen.  A truly international night of jazz with the addition of Andrea Pozza who joins us from Italy.  His reviews say it all...

One of the most enduring and popular groups on the circuit, this group have performed all over the world from Venezuela to Hartlepool, from Ronnie Scott's to Cardiff Bay, whilst festivals in Europe have included Marciac and Coutances in France, and three repeat bookings at the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland.   The band were awarded the "John Dankworth Award For Ensemble" in the 1998 B.T. Jazz Awards, plus leader Derek Nash was voted one of the top five UK alto players at the same poll.  Prepare to be saxed out!


22 Dave Newton Quintet* BOOK NOW

This is the quintet that was one of our festival highlights in 2012 and led by the highly popular Mr Newton.  The group was formed for that date and we've asked Dave to come back and do it all over again for us in two hours of seriously entertaining music.  Dave is of course one of our leading pianists, dripping with jazz awards for his exciting relentless swing. Tonight he is joined by the same personnel, a superlative selection of musicians, guaranteeing another great night to remember.


29 Brandon Allen Sextet* BOOK NOW

Brandon Allen, Nigel Hitchcock – Saxes, Mark Nightingale – Trombone, Ross Stanley – Piano, Sam Burgess – Bass, Ian Thomas – Drums

Host of the Late Late Show at Ronnie Scott’s every Wednesday with his quartet, Brandon Allen has an enviable reputation as one of the finest saxophonists, having worked with stars ranging from Eric Clapton, Mica Paris and Neil Diamond to US3, Keith Tippett and Tony Christie, appearing regularly at jazz festivals around the world.  Tonight he brings to Herts Jazz his sextet, showcasing his own compositions and arrangements and in stellar company.
