Tommy, who died in 2013, was one of this country's best loved musicians, achieving fame from the early days of British jazz through the big bands and finally later in life as a small group band leader. As well as being an exceptional musician, he was also a talented composer and this evening pays tribute to some of his compositions, interspersed with narration by his wife and partner for many years, vocalist Barbara Jay. We're also delighted to have Art themen back at the club (Herts Jazz's Honorary Patron), who will be playing Tommy's music on tenor.

One of the most enduring and popular groups on the circuit, this group have performed all over the world from Venezuela to Hartlepool, from Ronnie Scott's to Cardiff Bay, whilst festivals in Europe have included Marciac and Coutances in France, and three repeat bookings at the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland. The band were awarded the "John Dankworth Award For Ensemble" in the 1998 B.T. Jazz Awards, plus leader Derek Nash was voted one of the top five UK alto players at the same poll. This is the quintet that was one of our festival highlights in 2012 and led by the highly popular Mr Newton. The group was formed for that date and we've asked Dave to come back and do it all over again for us in two hours of seriously entertaining music. Dave is of course one of our leading pianists, dripping with jazz awards for his exciting relentless swing. Tonight he is joined by the same personnel, a superlative selection of musicians, guaranteeing another great night to remember.

Host of the Late Late Show at Ronnie Scott’s every Wednesday with his quartet, Brandon Allen has an enviable reputation as one of the finest saxophonists, having worked with stars ranging from Eric Clapton, Mica Paris and Neil Diamond to US3, Keith Tippett and Tony Christie, appearing regularly at jazz festivals around the world. Tonight he brings to Herts Jazz his sextet, showcasing his own compositions and arrangements and in stellar company.
